The Nave - 1200 to 1220

In 1963, during restoration work to the nave, aisles and transept floors 21 burial vaults were uncovered under the nave floor. These brick vaults were built between 1770 & 1840 The single brick arched roofs were found to lie in an unstable condition and having discovered that these vaults were of no historical value they were filled them in.

The general practice of burials inside a church ceased about 1840.

The unusually lofty nave arcades rest on four piers which have capitals of very fine stiff-leafed foliage.

The nave roof is the original one built in 1220 and the trusses are numbered from 1 to 28.

The six supports and braces below the main tie beams were placed in position at a later date and possibly completed when new seating and various other repairs were carried out in 1867.

The brass candelabra supported on the cast tie beam was a gift from W. Christopher Elderfield in 1766.
